Recent Advances in Bracken Fern Toxin Research

چکیده
Bracken fern, commonly found in hilly regions contains toxic substances. It is reported to cause alimentary carcinoma and haematuria in both animals and human beings. Present paper deals with the recent advances in bracken fern toxins research in animals. Bracken fern-induced malignant tumors in rats: absence of mutations in p53, H-ras and K-ras and no microsatellite instability.
Bracken fern (genus Pteridium) has been shown to induce tumors in domestic and experimental animals. Epidemiological studies have also shown an association between human exposure to bracken toxins and increased risk for the development of upper gastrointestinal tract tumors. Our aim in this study was to investigate possible genomic alterations in bracken fern-induced tumors of experimental anim...
متن کاملLymphatic leukemia and pulmonary tumors in female Swiss mice fed bracken fern (Pteris aquilina).
Bracken fern (Pteris aquilina) mixed with a grain mixture (1:3 by weight) was fed to a group of 40 female 6-week-old Swiss mice intermittently every other week for a total experimental period of 60 weeks. Thirty-three mice survived 30 or more weeks and all developed lymphatic leukemia with multiple organ involvement. Additionally, 5 mice developed multiple pulmonary tumors. No urinary bladder o...
متن کاملRemote sensing applications for monitoring the spatial distribution of Bracken fern (Pteridium) in the Cathedral Peak: Drakensberg, South Africa
Bracken fern is one of the major invasive plants distributed all over the world currently threatening socio-economic and ecological systems due to its ability to swiftly colonize landscapes. The study aimed at reviewing the progress and challenges in detecting and mapping bracken fern weeds using multispectral remotely sensed data. Evidence from literature have revealed that traditional methods...
متن کاملAssay of fractions of bracken fern (Pteris aquilina) for carcinogenic activity.
fractions of bracken fern-fed cattle and of cows bearing spontaneous urinary bladder tumors contained some carcinogenic substance(s) which induced tumors in the bladder of the calf, dog, rat, or mouse and tumors in the skin of mice. It is not known whether this carcinogenic activity is attributable to bracken fern itself or to its metabolites. It has been shown (22) that the carcinogenicity of ...
متن کاملAssay of fractions of bovine urine for carcinogenic activity after feeding bracken fern (Pteris aquilina).
Urine from cattle fed fresh and dried bracken fern for more than 2 years and urine from control cattle was extracted with ethyl acetate and divided into nonacidic and acidic fractions. The residue obtained after removal of the solvent was mixed with 4 times its weight of cholesterol, and the mixture was converted to pellets with the aid of a pellet press. Pellets containing these residues were ...
